You've
only got one spirit, one body, one mind, one heart, one soul, to work from, to
use. But use them you must, in
various colors, and various disguises. Alec
Guiness finds his way into a part and becomes the person he plays, whereas
Humphrey Bogart was always Humphrey Bogart.
I think I'm like Guiness. There
aren't any exercises one can do, but I trust that one's center will grow with
experience. One just can't swallow light and make it happen.

| The opening of Cyrano had
the emotional impact on my system of a very bad car crash
I felt like I was flying through the windshield.
I was waiting for my entrance in the wings for twelve minutes, and I
thought the audience must be saying, "When the fuck's he coming on?"
I took the deepest breath ever and threw myself out there.
A most unglamorous time.

Energy is visual and it's tangible… it’s the great communicator, really. And the audience can plug into that energy, become anything. It's not that the actor has got to sweat all night. It's a mental energy; it's thinking at the speed of light; it's a physical fastness, a physical awareness, and instant adaptability, a vocal adaptability and an emotional turning on a sixpence, if necessary, without appearing to be tricksy. Sir Derek Jacobi 1992
