An
outgoing, loud-mouthed nature on a film set can easily be mistaken for
talent. It's what Hollywood is all about- how big a noise you can make,
the status, the fact that the more fuss you make the more important you
are. I can't make a fuss to save my life. I'm just, well, just me.
Sir
Derek Jacobi
1997 With Gielgud going, it is the end of an era. I don't think we'll ever see anything like them again, although people like Derek Jacobi and Maggie Smith can still do it all fabulously. Sam Mendes 2000 |

I knew I had to get back to the theater, but I was afraid I was losing my nerve and never would. My instinct was screaming --- screaming! I thought, you've got to play these parts ---but have you got the courage to play them? I'll never forget opening night of 'Much Ado' in Stratford --- wearing high heels on a steeply raked glass stage. I knew the part backwards and forwards, but suddenly I thought I didn't know anything, and it was the worst moment of my life. My costume turned black with sweat. Stage fright is too mild a word for it; it is absolute stark terror. Sir Derek Jacobi 1984
He's an extraordinary actor, who's tackled some of the most difficult plays ever written with incredible distinction. And, he's one of the most wonderful human beings. The combination makes him almost unique. Todd Haimes 2000

Derek is astonishing to watch on stage; the verve, the pure concentration and energy and truthfulness are his alone. Rita Gam 1988
What Derek has got that hardly any other actor has got
is this astonishing power. He has such energy too. It come from
within and he has total dedication. He will read a play over and over
again and together we will talk about it endlessly.
Hugh Whitmore 2000 |
